About Philippa
I live in Kendal, Cumbria and my teaching practice, Vital Freedom Alexander Technique, is based there. I am a member of STAT (the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Techique). Membership of STAT requires completion of an approved training course, and also means that I have Public Liability cover, Professional Indemnity cover and have been fully CRB checked.
I have lived in Scotland most of my life but in the mid 2000s I moved to Kendal, where I completed the accredited three year full-time Alexander Technique teacher training course at Cumbria Alexander Training.
In addition to being an Alexander Technique teacher, I am a self-taught professional musician (see Macaroon Music) and I also do part-time computer work.
How the Alexander Technique has helped me, and how it can help you
I came to the Alexander Technique some years ago because of my own experience of pain, tension and stress, which had begun to accompany many of my day-to-day activities including computer work and playing music. I had begun to feel that my life was restricted.
When I began to learn the technique, I realised that the above problems were all related and that for many years I had been holding myself in and pulling myself down through my own habitual ways of reacting and moving. Using the unique process of guided self-discovery which is the Alexander Technique I learned that I could free myself from pain, tension and stress by letting go of these old habits.
Using the Alexander Technique, I feel lighter, easier and more confident and this affects all my daily activities.
The technique has had a profound effect on my experience of music-playing and performance, increasing my range of movement and allowing me to play more freely and spontaneously, and without stage-fright.Completing the three-year training course has given me the opportunity to pass the Alexander Technique on to others. I can help you learn how to practise the technique so that you can let go of pain, feel more comfortable in yourself and more co-ordinated, have more energy, and enjoy exploring the potential of what your mind and body can do.
You will find out, like I did, that there is no need to suffer from aches, pain and stress. I can show you that with the Alexander Technique it is possible to do all activities without damaging yourself, and to have more focus, energy and stamina.
You will be able to live life with increased ease of movement, greater creativity and deeper enjoyment, and if you are a musician, actor, public speaker or athlete, your performance will be enhanced, whatever level you are at.
The Alexander Technique is taught in a spirit of complete acceptance. In this spirit you can become aware of your ingrained harmful habits and learn to release yourself from them without judgment. The natural state of balance and ease within you can then be allowed to flourish.
